Introduction

Lightning Arrester

Elektrolites, as a diversification to their present isolator and S.F.U. manufacturing activities embarked on the manufacturing Metal Oxide Gapless Type Lightning Arrester which are an indispensable protective device needed by all electrical utilities all over the world for the protection of Transformers against natural lightning and switching surges arising in the Transmission Line Network. Elektrolites has designed and developed Heavy Duty class station arresters. 

Lightning Arrester

Distribution class LA for protection of HV Transformer. It has been observed that with 5kA LA the safety of transformer equipment is very less, because of less rating it can pass the normal natural lightning surges but whenever there are high voltage surges from lightning or switching operation, the 5kA LA cannot resist due to which failure of LA is possible. The new concept of using 10 kA LA in place of 5 kA for distribution transformers is more resistive with better longevity for protection.

Construction and operating principle

Zinc Oxide MOV blocks

Electrolites’ Surge Arrester consists of highly non-linear varistor elements housed in a non porous electrical porcelain housing with hermetic pressure relief sealing system.
When an electric surge due to natural lightning or switching action appears across the arrester, the block stack allows the entire energy to earth by posing a very low resistance and instantaneously recovers to its original insulation property after the passage of surge, getting ready for next operation.

Pressure relief capability (Short Circuit Test)

In the remote event of failure of our arrester a pressure relief device is incorporated which operates due to high pressure inside and vents the power arc to the atmosphere thereby preventing the violent shattering of porcelain housing and minimizing the possibility of a potentially catastrophic failure of nearby substation equipment.. 

Elektrolites arresters are type tested is accordance with the requirement of IEC-60099-4 and IS-3070-Part III- 1993 to prove the pressure relief capabilities. 

Temporary Over Voltage (TOV)

Elektrolites arresters are designed to withstand the electrical stresses arising out of Temporary Power frequency over voltage that exceed arrester MCOV or even “Arrester Rating”.

Quality And Performance Check

Elektrolites is an ISO:9001-2000 certified Company by BVQI and are mainly concerned with the quality and performance of the products manufactured. The quality system incorporates the following : 

  1. Inward inspection of all incoming material as per relevant drawings & specifications before taking into stores. 
  2. Pre-assembly inspection and testing to ascertain the conformance with the standards and customer requirements. 
  3. Post assembly testing on routine basis as per standard requirement. Acceptance tests carried on random selected samples before offering to customer inspection. 
  4. Packing and dispatch inspection to verify the accessories to go with that go with arresters like mounting clamp, hardware, surge counter disconnector, grading ring and insulating base.
